TOPICS

The Natural Laws of Breastfeeding
75 - 90 minutes
CERP

Covers the entire course of breastfeeding, from birth to weaning, incorporating key paradigm shifts and innovative teaching strategies.  Includes the significance of right-brain interactions in the early postpartum, the importance of touch to health and survival, how realistic expectations can help increase breastfeeding duration, the effect of breast storage capacity on feeding patterns, and much more.
Note: This session provides information in Nancy's book for parents--Breastfeeding Made Simple: Seven Natural Laws for Nursing Mothers (co-authored with Kathleen Kendall-Tackett, PhD, IBCLC). It offers an update for clinicians and others who work with breastfeeding mothers. Offering this book for sale at the talk (the second edition is now available) can be an effective fundraiser for your organization.

Working and Breastfeeding Made Simple
75 - 90 minutes
CERP

Learn new ways to help employed mothers structure daily routines, calculate a baby's milk needs, and troubleshoot milk production issues using the new Magic Number concept so that they can more easily meet their long-term breastfeeding goals.
Note: Primarily geared to those who work with mothers after hospital discharge.

Helping Mothers Who Exclusively Pump
75 - 90 minutes
CERP

We are in the midst of a pumping epidemic. Learn what the latest research tells us about how to establish healthy milk production for mothers with babies in the NICU and for those who choose to pump and bottle feed. Find out how to use breast storage capacity to individualize a pumping plan and specific strategies for how to best support mothers in this situation.  Note: This session covers information needed by in-hospital clinicians and by those who help mothers after discharge.

Nipple Pain and Trauma: Causes and Treatments
75 - 90 minutes
CERP

Do many of the mothers you see find breastfeeding painful?  This session provides an in-depth review of the causes of nipple pain and trauma.  It also reviews comfort measures mothers can use and includes a four-stage system for assessing nipple trauma and recommended,                    evidence-based treatments for each stage.  Note: This session is appropriate both for healthcare professionals and breastfeeding educators.

Simplifying Breastfeeding: The First 36 Hours
75 - 90 minutes
CERP

Geared for those who work with mothers and babies after birth. Learn how to make early breastfeeding easier, which postpartum practices have long-term implications, what biology tells us about normal feeding patterns, and the effects of skin-to-skin contact and separation on infant stability.

Understanding Breastfeeding Behaviors
75 - 90 minutes
CERP

Add more “tools” to your “lactation toolbox” at this video-packed session, which includes an international cast of characters. Provides a chronological summary of recommended approaches to latch, with a description of what we got right and which assumptions were later proved wrong.  Includes an overview of the hardwiring both mothers and babies bring to breastfeeding, a checklist for evaluating basic breastfeeding dynamics, and anatomical issues that can interfere.

Using the International Code to Create Change
75 - 90 minutes
CERP

Change is in the air. Learn how the International Code for the Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes applies to healthcare professionals, its implications to our daily practice, a new process to evaluate U.S. companies' compliance with the International Code and some new developments that may help protect breastfeeding in the U.S.  Note: This talk qualifies for E CERPs, a requirement for recertification.

Pumping and Breastfeeding in the NICU
 90-120 minutes
CERP

This session focuses on research-based strategies for supporting breastfeeding in preterm or ill babies, including  safeguarding mother’s milk production and facilitating baby’s transition to direct breastfeeding. Learn how Swedish NICUs successfully transitioned 85% of their 36-week-old preemies to exclusive breastfeeding. (90 or 120 min.)  Note: This talk is geared to those working in hospital settings.

Transitioning to the Breast
75 - 90 minutes
CERP

Learn how term and preterm babies can be transitioned from bottles, nipple shields, and other feeding methods to full breastfeeding using insights from recent research.  A four-part framework is provided for determining possible causes of breast refusal along with insights into how to target interventions to the cause of the feeding problem. Because babies are hardwired to breastfeed, even those who have been fed using other methods for months can be helped to accept the breast. Note: This talk is appropriate for those working in hospitals as well as those working with mothers and babies in other settings.

Concerns About Low Milk Production
75 - 90 minutes
CERP

This session offers a high-level discussion of milk production at different stages of breastfeeding and in different situations.  It begins with a primer on assessing milk adequacy during the first week of life, the need for supplements, and when supplements are needed, feeding volumes and methods.  It provides a review of up-to-date, evidence-based strategies for optimizing milk production in mothers exclusively pumping and a guide for using the new Magic Number concept to help employed mothers maintain their milk production long term.  It ends with a brief overview of galactogogues, both prescribed and herbal.
